One of the great perks about being a member of Johnny Earthquake and The Moondogs is the number of famous musicians, celebrities, and stars of sports and screen that we have had the opportunity to meet, and in many cases, perform with, and / or record with.  When we look back now over the band’s career, the list is pretty mind boggling.

Johnny Earthquake himself has had some pretty cool experiences, performing with The Beach Boys, The Doobie Brothers, Percy Sledge, The Rascals, BadFinger, and Wayne Toups, to name but a few.

He’s also gotten to hang out with Ringo Starr, Robert Plant, Elvis Costello, ZZ Top, and many others.

The list of performers who have taken the stage with the Moondogs is no less impressive.  They include:

Three members of Elvis Presley’s band (Rock & Roll Hall of Famer James Burton, D.J. Fontana, and Estelle Brown), Rick Derringer, Sam the Sham, Mitch Ryder, Trombone Shorty, Big Sam, Wayne Toups, T. Graham Brown, and Jo El Sonnier to name but a few.

Our memorable experiences with these legends are too numerous to mention.  However, one special day in 2009 at Hirsch Memorial Coliseum, in Shreveport tops the list.  The Moondogs were appearing at the James Burton International Guitar Festival and were the “House band” in an attempt to break the Guinness Book of World record for “Most guitars played at once” or something like that.  Bands were encouraged to bring their guitars and play along with us and nearly two thousand did.  It was quite the spectacle and a scene we will never forget.

On that stage with the little ol’ Moondogs out of Natchitoches Louisiana, were some of the greatest guitarists in Rock & Roll History, including: James Burton (Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Elvis Presley, Ricky Nelson, John Denver’s Band) Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Albert Lee (Eric Clapton’s band), Steve Lukather (Toto and Ringo Starr’s band) Jennifer Batten (Michael Jackson and Jeff Beck’s bands), Nokie Edwards (The Ventures), David Grissom (The Allman Brothers, Dixie Chicks, and John Mellencamp’s bands), Country/gospel guitarist extraordinaire Doyle Dykes, Blues legend Junior Brown, and several others.

While we came up a little short in the world record attempt, we wondered if we had not inadvertently set another record: one for “The Most World Class Guitarists Ever To Perform On A Single Stage”.

Getting to be part of part of unforgettable experiences like this is why we often say to each other:

“It’s good to be a Moondog.”
